CHICAGO (AP) ? Zac Vawter considers himself a test pilot. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident, the 31-year-old software engineer signed up to become a research subject, helping to test a trailblazing prosthetic leg that's controlled by his thoughts.

He will put this groundbreaking bionic leg to the ultimate test Sunday when he attempts to climb 103 flights of stairs to the top of Chicago's Willis Tower, one of the world's tallest skyscrapers.

If all goes well, he'll make history with the bionic leg's public debut. His whirring, robotic leg will respond to electrical impulses from muscles in his hamstring. Vawter will think, "Climb stairs," and the motors, belts and chains in his leg will synchronize the movements of its ankle and knee. Vawter hopes to make it to the top in an hour, longer than it would've taken before his amputation, less time than it would take with his normal prosthetic leg ? or, as he calls it, his "dumb" leg.

A team of researchers will be cheering him on and noting the smart leg's performance. When Vawter goes home to Yelm, Wash., where he lives with his wife and two children, the experimental leg will stay behind in Chicago. Researchers will continue to refine its steering. Taking it to the market is still years away.

"Somewhere down the road, it will benefit me and I hope it will benefit a lot of other people as well," Vawter said about the research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Bionic ? or thought-controlled ? prosthetic arms have been available for a few years, thanks to pioneering work done at the Rehabilitation Institute. With leg amputees outnumbering people who've lost arms and hands, the Chicago researchers are focusing more on lower limbs. Safety is important. If a bionic hand fails, a person drops a glass of water. If a bionic leg fails, a person falls down stairs.

The Willis Tower climb will be the bionic leg's first test in the public eye, said lead researcher Levi Hargrove of the institute's Center for Bionic Medicine. The climb, called "SkyRise Chicago," is a fundraiser for the institute with about 2,700 people climbing. This is the first time the climb has played a role in the facility's research.

To prepare, Vawter and the scientists have spent hours adjusting the leg's movements. On one recent day, 11 electrodes placed on the skin of Vawter's thigh fed data to the bionic leg's microcomputer. The researchers turned over the "steering" to Vawter.

He kicked a soccer ball, walked around the room and climbed stairs. The researchers beamed.

Vawter likes the bionic leg. Compared to his regular prosthetic, it's more responsive and more fluid. As an engineer, he enjoys learning how the leg works.

It started with surgery in 2009. When Vawter's leg was amputated, a surgeon repositioned the residual spaghetti-like nerves that normally would carry signals to the lower leg and sewed them to new spots on his hamstring. That would allow Vawter one day to be able to use a bionic leg, even though the technology was years away.

The surgery is called "targeted muscle reinnervation" and it's like "rewiring the patient," Hargrove said. "And now when he just thinks about moving his ankle, his hamstring moves and we're able to tell the prosthesis how to move appropriately."

To one generation it sounds like "The Six Million Dollar Man," a 1970s TV show featuring a rebuilt hero. A younger generation may think of Luke Skywalker's bionic hand.

But Hargrove's inspiration came not from fiction, but from his fellow Canadian Terry Fox, who attempted a cross-country run on a regular artificial leg to raise money for cancer research in 1980.

"I've run marathons, and when you're in pain, you just think about Terry Fox who did it with a wooden leg and made it halfway across Canada before cancer returned," Hargrove said.

Experts not involved in the project say the Chicago research is on the leading edge. Most artificial legs are passive. "They're basically fancy wooden legs," said Daniel Ferris of the University of Michigan. Others have motorized or mechanical components but don't respond to the electrical impulses caused by thought.

"This is a step beyond the state of the art," Ferris said. "If they can achieve it, it's very noteworthy and suggests in the next 10 years or so there will be good commercial devices out there."

The $8 million project is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and involves Vanderbilt University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rhode Island and the University of New Brunswick.

Vawter and the Chicago researchers recently took the elevator to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower to see the view after an afternoon of work in the lab. Hargrove and Vawter bantered in the elevator in anticipation of Sunday's event.

Hargrove: "Am I allowed to trash talk you?"

"It's fine," Vawter shot back. "I'll just defer it all to the leg that you built."

At the top, Vawter stood on a glass balcony overlooking the city. The next time he heads to the top, he and the bionic leg will take the stairs.

First direct detection sheds light on dark galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Most people think of galaxies as huge islands of stars, gas and dust that populate the universe in visual splendor. Theory, however, has predicted there are other types of galaxies that are devoid of stars and made predominately of dense gas. These "dark" galaxies would be unseen against the black backdrop of the universe.

Now, an international team of astronomers has detected several dark galaxies by observing the fluorescent glow of their hydrogen gas, illuminated by the ultraviolet light of a nearby quasar. But what exactly are dark galaxies, and what role do they play in the evolution of our universe?

"Dark galaxies are composed of dark matter and gas, but for some reason they have not been able to form stars," said Martin Haehnelt, Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. "Some theoretical models have predicted that dark galaxies were common in the early universe when galaxies had more difficulty forming stars -- partly because their density of gas was not sufficient to form stars -- and only later did galaxies begin to ignite stars, becoming like the galaxies we see today."

Haehnelt is a member of the scientific team that detected these galaxies. According to Haehnelt, one can begin to understand the importance of dark galaxies by looking at our own Milky Way. "We expect the precursor to the Milky Way was a smaller bright galaxy that merged with dark galaxies nearby. They all came together to form our Milky Way that we see today."

Another member of the team, Sebastiano Cantalupo of the University of California, Santa Cruz, agreed that dark galaxies are the building blocks of modern galaxies. "In our current theory of galaxy formation, we believe that big galaxies form from the merger of smaller galaxies. Dark galaxies bring to big galaxies a lot of gas, which then accelerates star formation in the bigger galaxies."

The techniques used for detecting dark galaxies also may provide a new way to learn about other phenomena in the universe, including what some call the "cosmic web" -- unseen filaments of gas and dark matter believed to permeate the universe, feeding and building galaxies and galaxy clusters where the filaments intersect.

"I wonder if we can indeed use this technique to see the emission of filamentary gas in the cosmic web, and if so, how close are we to seeing that?" said team member Simon Lilly of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. "That has been something of a Holy Grail for many, many years and I think this most recent discovery of dark galaxies is a significant step toward the goal."

I have children about that age and I would never let them out in something like that. Give me some Ex-Etiquette tips I can work with here. I can see a huge fight coming on.

I haven't heard you mention one thing about your bonusdaughter's father-which is a huge red flag and suggests that there may be an ongoing battle between mom and bonusmom concerning house rules and morals and dad may have a tendency to stand on the sidelines and let the women fight it out. However, if dad was more invested, there might not be the question of what's appropriate for his 10-year-old daughter to wear. So, my first ex-etiquette tip if these parents are coparenting, Dad has to find his voice. Both dad and mom have to get into the act and you, as the bonusmom, support their rules. (That's ex-etiquette rule No. 4.)

What happens if your rules are different than their rules? After all, you have kids of your own to consider. That's a tough one, and the time for peaceful negotiation. Once the child grew out of the desire to go trick-or-treating, that's when clothes got a little bit crazy. There is a transition age that causes havoc in most homes and that's middle school. Most girls look far older than they really are, they want to dress provocatively like they see in the media, but it's completely inappropriate. That's when parents and bonusparents have to stand firmly together or the child will quickly learn she can play one against the other. If you hear the words, "Mom (or Dad ) lets me do it," it's an indicator the child doesn't think you will verify it with the other parent. Very bad ex-etiquette! When divorced parents peacefully problem-solve (not fight) in front of their children, it will teach the children to respect the other parent and how to negotiate with someone with whom you may not get along all the time. That's good ex-etiquette.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? The Ukrainian president's party will retain its strong grip on power, according to returns Monday from a parliamentary election that was criticized by Western observers as unfair and biased against the opposition.

The West was paying close attention to Sunday's vote in the strategic ex-Soviet state of 46 million people, which lies between Russia and the European Union and serves as a key transit nation for Russian energy supplies to many EU countries.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe called the vote a setback to Ukraine's democratic and European aspirations. That assessment could lead to a further freeze in Kiev's ties with the West and push it closer to Russia.

Monitors said the election was marred by the absence of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and another opposition leader, the ruling party's use of government funding for the campaign and the skewed media coverage that favored the ruling party. While the voting process got positive ratings at most polling stations observed, the vote tallying lacked transparency, the group said.

"Considering the abuse of power and the excessive role of money in this election, democratic progress appears to have reversed in Ukraine," said Walburga Habsburg Douglas, the special coordinator who led the OSCE election observation mission. "We do not think that this election was fair because it was not level."

"Ukrainians deserved better from these elections," said Andreas Gross, the Head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe delegation. "Unfortunately, the great democratic potential of Ukrainian society was not realized in yesterday's vote."

The U.S. State Department characterized Ukraine's elections as "a step backwards from progress made during previous parliamentary elections and the 2010 presidential election, elections that had marked important steps forward for Ukraine's democracy."

In a statement, the State Department expressed concern over "the use of government resources to favor ruling party candidates, interference with media access, and harassment of opposition candidates."

The State Department also was "troubled by allegations of fraud and falsification in the voting process and tabulation, by the disparity between preliminary results from the Central Election Commission and parallel vote tabulations, and by the Central Election Commission's decision not to release precinct results."

President Viktor Yanukovych's Russia-friendly Party of Regions was leading in the count with 34 percent of the vote. Tymoshenko's pro-Western party was second with 23 percent, trailed by the Communists, Yanukovych's traditional allies, with 15 percent. Another liberal party, Udar (Punch), led by world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko had 13 percent and the far-right Svoboda (Freedom) party had 9 percent.

Yanukovych's party benefited strongly from an electoral change last year that replaced the strictly proportional electoral system with a mixed one, in which half of parliament's seats are elected based on party lists and the other half in individual races.

Despite a combined strong showing of opposition parties, Yanukovych's party was poised to retain its parliamentary majority as its candidates were expected to take the lead in individual races, benefitting from greater access to government funds and the opposition's fielding of multiple candidates.

Tymoshenko's party alleged widespread violations such as vote-buying and multiple voting. Tymoshenko, who was sentenced last year to seven years in prison for abuse of office in a trial condemned by the West as politically motivated, launched a hunger strike to protest the vote violations.

The Party of Regions defended Sunday's election, saying it reflected the people's will.

"We received a great credit of trust from the voters who said that we are moving down the right path," said Yanukovych adviser Hanna Herman.

The opposition tapped into the anger over Tymoshenko's jailing, the country's rampant corruption and a stagnant economy to make a strong showing in the proportional section of the vote. It remains to be seen whether Tymoshenko's group, Klitschko's party and the radical Svoboda can form a strong alliance.

"The Party of Regions won by the number of points, but the opposition scored a moral victory," said Kiev-based political expert Volodymyr Fesenko. "The monopoly on power will be harder to maintain."

Experts say while Yanukovych's supporters seem poised to retain their parliament majority, they will fall short of winning the two-thirds of seats needed to change the constitution.

Political analyst Vadym Karasyov said the new parliament will be "turbulent" and the opposition will seek to block some of the undemocratic initiatives the president may launch.

"Yanukovych can get a simple majority, but it doesn't mean anything, because without a constitutional majority in parliament he cannot radically change anything," Karasyov said.

The showing of the far-right Svoboda party, which had been expected to barely pass the 5 percent vote threshold, emerged as a big surprise.

Svoboda, which campaigns for the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture and strongly attacks Yanukovych, is also known for xenophobic and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Analysts said the party's popularity was due more to many Ukrainians' anger with the ruling party than vehemently nationalist views.

Ever wonder how you can make your own Apple Cider? ?I'm telling you, it's extremely easy! ?This cider is wonderful hot or cold, so you can decide how you want to serve it! It requires NO added sugar! ?Nothing but pure goodness! ?Plus, you get a bonus of Chunky Applesauce out of this too! ?(You can't just throw those apples away!) ?

Hit up your local farmer's market this weekend (probably the last if you live near me) and get those apples into your crock! ?Your family will thank you! ?Plus, if you have a yard full of leaves like I do, you'll need a nice warm beverage to come in and warm up with!

Apple Cider

Ingredients:
9-10 Apples (Use a variety of apples, such as Gala, Red Delicious and Fuji)
4 cups water
1?cinnamon?stick?

Directions:
Wash the apples, core and slice them. Place them into your crock (keep the peel on) with the 2 cups of water. ?Cook?on LOW for 7-8 hours or on HIGH for 4 hours.
Scoop out all of your apples into a colander and let the juice drain into a bowl. ?
Pour the juice back into your crock with the remaining juice left from scooping the apples out. Place the cinnamon stick into the juice and let it simmer on low for an hour or two.?You can either serve it warm, or refrigerate it and serve it cold. Enjoy!

Chunky Applesauce

Directions:
Follow the method above for making apple cider. After you drain the juice from the apples, place them in a bowl and mash them. Add 2-3 Tbsp. of white Sugar. ?Enjoy!

But metabolism is much more than the rate at which calories are burned. Metabolism is the process of breaking down food into smaller molecules for various uses in the body. Certain foods or ingredients might interfere with a person?s metabolism, as can a lack of nutrients, high blood sugar or an overabundance of stress hormones. This metabolic disruption is often behind a person?s inability to lose weight, even when they are taking steps to eat right and exercise.

Michelle Stork, 43, from Chanhassen, Minn., had resigned herself to creeping weight gain, despite diligently working out for years. ?As time went on it was easier to gain than lose weight,? she recalls. ?Exercise alone wasn?t taking it off.?

She accepted the weight gain as a normal part of getting older, but Edberg, her personal trainer, didn?t. He encouraged her to take a simple blood test to check for underlying metabolic issues. ?I could see on paper what the problems were and it motivated me to try what my trainer suggested,? Stork says. She slowly added recommended supplements, including vitamin D, probiotics and fish oil, which increased her energy, but didn?t affect her weight. The next step was to change her diet.

?We discovered a high likelihood that she was sensitive to gluten and dairy,? Edberg says. Unlike an allergy, a sensitivity means the hormones derived from the metabolic process of such foods send confusing messages to the brain, which can cause various symptoms, including weight gain. Within a month of eliminating gluten and dairy from her diet Stork lost more than 10 percent body fat and dropped 12 pounds and two sizes.

?If someone has a thyroid issue,?nutrient deficiency, sex hormone imbalance, etc., they will gain weight,? Edberg explains. As a certified weight loss coach, he knows that unless the true underlying metabolic issue is addressed?a person will not sustainably lose weight. ?All the exercise in the world will not fix a thyroid issue or nutrient deficiency. In some cases it might make the underlying problem worse.?

Genetic studies may predict criminal tendencies | ASU News | The ...

A law professor believes genetic profiling should be used to identify children who are predisposed to violent criminal behaviors.

Law professor Gary Marchant cited several studies in an October Slate Magazine article identifying gene mutations that can be linked with behavioral control problems early in human development.

?In grade one or two, you start to see the kids that have problems,? Marchant said.? ?Maybe we should be looking at their brains and genes as part of their treatment.?

His interest in law and technology led Marchant to study many court cases in which criminals have successfully reduced their sentencing, often from capital punishment to life in prison, by proving a genetic predisposition to violent behavior.

?If this is the case, maybe we could find these people ahead of time and try to stem off these crimes from occurring,? he said. ?It could substantially reduce crime.?

Psychology professor Nancy Eisenberg, an editor of academic journal Child Development Perspectives, said identifying such genes early in child development could lead to a decrease in violent behavior, but only if the environmental factors that affect the genes can also be identified.

?It shouldn?t just be used to say these are problem kids,? she said. ?The environment needs to be taken into account. Eventually these studies could be used for interventions with the families and schools of these children.?

Eisenberg said science can?t yet fully understand how environment factors into genes.

She said studies prove children with the affected behavioral genes often do better in good environments than those without these genes.

Psychology senior and new father Ian Smith said he would need a lot of convincing to agree to have his child screened because it is unfair to impose assumptions on children who have yet to act out.

?It really invalidates their choice and their humanity,? he said.? ?And there is a potential for a self-fulfilling prophecy as well.?

ASU psychology professor Keith Crnic said mandating intervention for children with these tendencies is problematic because science cannot yet accurately predict whom the genes will affect.

?I don?t know that we are at the point that we want to start mandating genetic therapy for people with gene propensities,? he said. ?The ethics of that are very problematic.?

He said Marchant might be looking at the issue from more of a legal standpoint and is perhaps missing the ethics of exploring this matter from a bio-behavioral standpoint.

Marchant agreed the idea is not ready for wide-scale implementation, but he said validating this evidence would help the affected children and their potential victims.

Marchant said studies show that pharmaceutical and dietary interventions, along with lifestyle changes, could reduce negative behaviors by up to 50 percent.

?Allocating more resources to these preventative measures would benefit the children at risk, their parents and the rest of society,? he said.

ASU alumna Leslie Ringler, a mother of two, said she can see both sides of the issue, but would not want to expose her children to knowing they are susceptible to violent behaviors.

?Anything that assumes or predisposes a child to be a certain way is just not in my philosophy of children and parenting,? she said.

Ringler, who graduated with a degree in education, said she would be open to the idea of genetic screening if the child?s rights could be protected.

?I?m just not sure we are able to balance that kind of consciousness in society yet,? she said.

Marchant said a careful approach is necessary to avoid stigmatizing at-risk children or their parents, but most parents should want to know if their children could benefit from intervention or therapy.

?Those parents may not like it now, but they will hate it a lot more when their kid is on the news because they just went and shot somebody, or a lot of people,? he said.

The milder cousin to food allergies, a food intolerance is a mild chemical reaction in the body that causes mild discomforts such as headaches, nausea or sweating. This week I spoke to Niki, 21, who is intolerant to gluten but remains optimistic about cooking, eating out and PIZZA.

Lip: First up, what?s your food situation?

Niki: Well, last year I found myself cutting back on bread and Weetbix as they felt too heavy on the stomach. A visit back home and to the family naturopath confirmed my suspicions ? I have gluten intolerance. This was the cause of all kinds of reactions I was having like morning congestion, headaches, stomach aches and that foggy head feeling, like I just couldn?t concentrate.

Lip: That sounds intense. It must have a big effect on your life?

Niki: Yup, I?ve never been a fussy eater. Now I actually have to think before popping something in my mouth and that?s quite difficult when someone is offering you what looks like a harmless piece of food or drink. These days you can never be too sure what is processed into food (don?t get me started on GM, artificial flavours and preservatives and MSG). I?ve said goodbye to pizza, bread, pasta ? yes, I?m no longer welcome in Italy ? Tim Tams, various baked goods and random things like soy sauce or liquorice. It?s crazy how much wheat there is in everything we eat today. ?I still slip up ? a friend offered me this non-alcoholic beer and seeming as I was so used to taste-testing his alcohol-free beverages I took one ?unladylike? gulp. This was followed by a rather delayed realisation that just like regular beer, alcohol-free beer contains quite a lot of wheat. Bring on congestion city.

Lip: Do you have any tips for other intolerance sufferers?

Niki: Honestly just take it like a challenge. If there?s something in a food that doesn?t agree with you, don?t be lenient because it?ll take a while to leave your system and the symptoms/reactions aren?t worth suffering in the meantime. It may require you to cook more (which doesn?t bother me as I love cooking) but if you do your research right, the meals you can create are interesting and taste amazing. Moving to Melbourne has been a blessing as there are eateries that offer gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free etc. options and spell out the ingredients so I can still eat out. It?s best that you go to the smaller, quieter or family-owned caf?s and restaurants as they usually have an idea of what?s going into the food (so do ask!).

Obama, Romney campaign with eye on storm forecast

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With an eye on the weather forecast, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are starting a 10-day sprint to the finish line in a contest increasingly about momentum versus math.

"Let's win this," Romney emailed supporters Saturday as he hopped a plane from one important state to another ? Ohio to Florida.

"We're defying odds and holding strong," he told his backers and urged them to contribute more money to help Republicans keep up the fight.

His running mate, Paul Ryan, was out early in rainy, chilly Ohio to visit a factory in New Philadelphia, where he told voters, "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

A huge storm barreling toward the East Coast and some battleground states had both campaigns adjusting travel schedules and canceling events. Even at this late date in the campaign, neither side wanted to risk the appearance of putting politics ahead of public safety.

The president pressed on with a campaign trip Saturday to New Hampshire but held a conference call with administration officials about emergency preparations from aboard Air Force One.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team is continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families but she added that "safety comes first and that's the case with early voting as well."

An email announcing that Vice President Joe Biden's Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., had been cancelled stated that the change was "being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."

Romney canceled a rally in Virginia Beach that was planned for Sunday, and aides said they were also considering scrapping two other events elsewhere in the state. None of Obama's campaign stops had been canceled, but he did adjust his travel schedule slightly. The campaign moved up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.

One prominent Romney supporter, Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., said Saturday he told the campaign he couldn't travel on Tuesday because he wanted to keep tabs on the storm.

With the Nov. 6 election fast approaching, Obama and Romney are tied nationally. But the president still appears to have more ways to reach the required 270 electoral votes.

The Obama campaign released a new TV ad Saturday urging Americans when they go into the voting booth to consider Romney's plans to roll back Wall Street reforms, transform Medicare into a voucher-like system and reduce spending on education while at the same time cutting taxes for the rich. The spot will air in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, all key battleground states.

The Republican nominee is trying to seize the momentum and turn a wave of GOP enthusiasm into an electoral victory.

Psaki threw water on the whole idea, saying Romney's team was "working overtime to spin that he has momentum."

Obama's campaign pressed forward with a get-out-the-vote effort that aides said had them leading or tied in every competitive state. The president was eschewing the lofty rhetoric of his 2008 run in favor of warning supporters that skipping out on voting could cost him the election.

"In 2000, Gore vs. Bush, 537 votes changed the direction of history in a profound way and the same thing could happen," Obama said in an interview Friday with MTV.

Romney was switching his attention to Florida on Saturday after spending much of the week focused on shoring up support in Ohio. While the Midwestern swing state could be crucial to Romney's re-election prospects, he also faces tremendous pressure to carry Florida, which offers 29 Electoral College votes, the most of any swing state.

Obama carried Florida by just 3 percentage points in 2008 and polls show the candidates tied.

The former Massachusetts governor was scheduled to attend three rallies, the first in Pensacola along the state's conservative Panhandle. He then moves to suburban Orlando before finishing his day with an evening rally just outside of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney was to be joined at all three events by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Ryan had his family in tow for the factory visit in New Philadelphia, and his 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? Juggling politics and storm preparations, Mitt Romney dangled a plea for bipartisanship before early voters in Florida on Saturday as Barack Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes. Both campaigns scrambled to steer clear of a most unlikely October surprise, a superstorm barreling up the East Coast.

With just 10 days left in an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy had both campaigns ripping up carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout and avoid any suggestion that they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

The campaigns pressed every possible angle in search of advantage ? even paying attention to punctuation.

Obama's campaign signs for months have said: "Forward." Now they say: "Forward!"

Romney, who has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independents in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida with a pledge to "build bridges" with the other party.

He coupled that message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision. Noting that Obama supporters like to chant "four more years" at the president's campaign rallies, Romney picked up on his crowd's own chant at the Pensacola Civic Center and said: "I like '10 more days' a lot better."

His warm-up act was more biting: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told the crowd that Obama was advancing "the ideas of countries that people come here to get away from." Pressed later on what countries he was referring to, Rubio said, "any big-government country in the world" and specifically referred to Mexico and Latin America.

Obama hauled his campaign to New Hampshire, where he told volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

It takes 270 electoral votes to win the election. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that are too close to call, New Hampshire among them.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The president said Romney even raised fees in Massachusetts on obtaining a birth certificate, "which would have been expensive for me." It was a veiled reference to opponents of the president who have incorrectly said he was born outside the United States. Copies of his birth certificate have been in high demand.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Romney scrapped plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. At a rally in Kissimee, Fla., he urged supporters to keep those in the storm's path "in your mind and in your hearts."

"You know how tough hurricanes can be," he told the Floridians.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns.

But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland. Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Plans for son Beau Biden, the Delaware attorney general, to join his father in Virginia were scrapped when he was called up by the National Guard to help with the storm.

Obama canceled Monday appearances in Prince William County, Virginia on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy as it moves ashore. He did move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and a ensuring speedy recovery effort.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team was continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families, but she added that with the storm headed for shore, "safety comes first, and that's the case with early voting as well."

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state that went for Obama four years ago and where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs this time. Both campaigns already have been working furiously to gain the advantage in the state's vote-by-mail program, an area where Republicans typically have been stronger.

"I need you to vote early!" Romney told supporters in Land O'Lakes.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan worked his way across rainy, chilly Ohio, on a two-day bus trip, with his family in tow. At a factory in New Philadelphia, Ryan stressed the hit that manufacturing industries have taken over the last four years and promised more coal jobs, natural gas jobs and increased military spending if Romney is elected.

Speaking to more than 1,000 supporters on the factory floor at Gradall Industries, Ryan told voters: "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

Campaign 2012 was serious business, with so little time left and the storm complicating the end game, but Ryan's children helped to lighten the tone. His 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains at the factory.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

During a later stop at a bakery in Circleville, Ohio, 10-year-old daughter Liz told the bakery clerk that her dad was "sugar-free except for doughnuts and ice cream."

"And apple-fritters," Ryan agreed.

Obama, for his part, made a stop at the Common Man Merrimack, a restaurant where he toasted patrons with a Common Man Ale, saying: "To voting. To America. Doesn't matter what party."

The campaigns and their allies kept up a steady stream of TV and radio ads in the battleground states. The right-leaning Americans for Job Security made a rare purchase of Philadelphia airtime, amounting to $1.2 million, for pro-Romney ads. While a few independent groups have tried to make Pennsylvania competitive for Romney, neither Obama nor Romney has devoted ad resources to the state, which is expected to go for Obama.
