One of the most frequently-asked questions at one of my reading events or book signings is how long it took to write one of my books. My answer for Raincloud was 18 months of writing plus another 10 for editing, design, and production.
Usually their eyes grew at my reply, leading me to sense that they were really asking, ?How long will it take for me to write my book??
Without even factoring in the varying length any book could be, the timeline to complete a novel can?t be measured. It all depends on your tangible commitment and the intangible aspects of your characters and story.
The best stories are the ones that develop naturally, almost as if they take on a life of their own.
I like to use the analogy of a parent and child. When a child is first born, a parent may imagine that child becoming a doctor, and set that child upon the appropriate path directed at that goal. But as the child grows and develops, it decides for itself what it wants to be.
My stories developed like that. I couldn?t rush them. They were done when they were done.
Just like your story will be.
So don?t worry about timelines (unless you have a contract to fulfill). Prepare to be in it for the short or long haul. And enjoy the ride while it lasts.
By the way ? don?t forget about the upcoming online Book Authors & Publishing event, where myself and other panelists will answer your questions on writing, publishing, and using Social Media to promote your work!
If you?re a writer, write. And if you?re a reader, keep reading. We need you!
