Broun needs to resign
During a recent speech, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, a medical doctor, said, ?All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it?s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.?
As a member of the U.S. House of Representative?s Committee on Science, Space and Technology, he should immediately tender his resignation.
In this day and age, to believe that the results of scientific investigations are fabrications created by Satan to deceive humans makes him incapable of the logical thought needed to reason through policy issues and pass judgment on the merits of scientific research. And he?s a doctor!
Wait, what was I thinking. Of course, as a tea party Republican, he is the perfect representative for their fringe conspiracist ideology.

?Nones? a good trend
Re: ??Nones? gaining ground ? Study: Protestants no longer majority; more people are unaffiliated,? Tuesday news story.
Pew reports the religiously unaffiliated is rising so that for the ?first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority.? This will rattle the forces of religion and frighten many who believe religion is the foundation of morality, our country and our way of life.
I believe those fears are misplaced. I believe the trend reflects a growing desire for substantive and relevant paradigms rooted in modern knowledge that are healthy and sound. Such desire, reflected in the recognition that abortion rights and gay rights ought not hinge on arbitrarily held traditional beliefs but instead on the knowledge of what those rights mean to individuals and society, motivates greater tolerance and understanding among Americans. I believe the decline of religious affiliation reflects recognition of the repressive intolerance and superstition often found at the root of much religious belief.
Rather than fear loss of the anchoring religion, we might find mature, solid footing in values and morality reflecting knowledge rather than knee-jerking to tradition and superstition.

Compassion is moral
Re: ?Liberals are immoral? by Larry Pletcher, Monday Letters.
I proudly bear the label ?liberal? but totally reject the immoral part with which the letter writer charges me. I mention none from the list of sexual proclivities he angrily accuses me of promoting.
The man I support for re-election as president is a fine, moral (Christian) family man, who has compassion for the poor, the sick and the extreme ends of the population ? children and elders. These demographics are mentioned also in the Bible with the command by Jesus to take care of them.
How are Romney and Ryan going to follow this advice from the Bible when they want to gut all programs to help ?the last and the least??

Far right?s regression
For Pletcher to say that everyone knows that homosexuality and same-sex marriage is unnatural and immoral is a generalization, as there are many Americans who do not believe this way. Homosexuals are born that way, just as heterosexuals are born as such. People do not choose to be homosexual, nor is it a mental disorder. Believing otherwise is na?ve at best, and psychology agrees with me, contrary to Pletcher?s assertion.
Taking the Bible?s scriptures literally on ?unnatural? lifestyles today is fruitless. One can still live life according to Jesus? teachings while still evolving with the changing societal trends and scientific findings concerning human nature.
His letter is a prime example of the extreme right?s desire to be regressive rather than progressive.
