iPhone 5: Everything to Know About Apple’s Launch Day

Everything Apple is getting longer and thinner.

The iPhone 5, announced earlier today and set to ship on Sept. 21, has a 4-inch Retina screen, giving it space for an extra row of apps. The new iPod Touch has the same new display. And the iPod Nano has stretched out to the point that is looks like a shrunken iPhone. If we?re to trust the demos, those beefed up screens are meant for horizontal video and games (and maybe some regular old productivity apps too).

The new iPhone display, with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, is packed with 326 pixels per inch (the overall size is 1136 x 640). It?s not just bigger and sharper, though?it?s also more accurate to your touch, a feat Apple achieved by removing a layer from previous iPhones and integrating the touch sensors into the display. Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the rationale behind the new size in a jab likely aimed at Samsung and other giant-phone manufacturers: ?It?s because of your hand?it should fit there.?

Behind that screen you?ll find just 7.6 mm of phone. But Apple never makes something thinner and lighter without some inverse-proportion work to make the device more powerful. This time, it replaces the A5 processor with the A6, whose CPU and graphics are twice as fast despite taking up 22 percent less space.

As for other improvements: Apple claims improved battery life?225 hours of standby use and 8 hours of 3G talk time. There?s a single radio chip, and another for voice and data. The ?dynamic antenna? allows connections at speeds up to 150 mbps. A five-magnet transducer improves audio, giving listeners access to a wider band of spectrum than before, and three microphones improve in-going audio, helping Siri to better hear barked commands.

The camera, too, gains power with the latest phone and performs better in low light. Also, the iPhone 5?s camera can automatically lace together adjacent photos to create huge panoramas, take photos while shooting video, and send photos to shared Photo Streams stored in the iCloud.

Nothing too surprising comes in the realm of apps; Apple announced the majority of iOS 6 additions in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. The phone?s look isn?t all that surprising either, since it basically matches the design of the supposedly leaked versions. Both colors of the iPhone 5 are subtly two-tone, with the black one combining shiny glass black and a matte finish back, while the white one combines shiny and brushed aluminum in back.

Perhaps the biggest change in how you actually interact with the phone is the new connector, called Lightning (which goes along with Thunderbolt in a much-too-cute way). The eight-signal interface is much smaller than the 30-pin connector Apple has used since 2003. It?s also reversible, so you don?t have to look for the tiny icon on one side before plugging it in. (If you still want to use your old 30-pin connector, you can buy an adapter. Selling apadters seems to be Apple?s favorite reason to add new interfaces besides the interfaces themselves.)

The iPhone 5 reveal, plus a look at the new iTunes (more minimalist design, a few new features but nothing to write home about), wasn?t enough for Apple. So the company also rebooted its line of iPods (except the classic version?no mention of it). The iPod Touch remains essentially a phoneless iPhone, gaining the iPhone 5?s new display, a better camera, longer battery life, and losing weight. And the Nano grows from a stout square to become a mini iPhone Touch (minus many of the features, of course), with the added ability to pause radio and stream audio via Bluetooth. The iPod Touch?available in five different colors, each with a wrist-strap?launches in October. So does the iPod Nano, available in seven colors, and a new line of headphones (not standard with the phone) called, incredibly, EarPods.

Pricing for the iPhone 5 is the same as for the 4S. With a contract, it costs $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64 GB. The store will allow pre-orders starting September 14, and the phone will begin shipping September 21 in some countries, followed by more on the 28th, and a total of 100 by December. Meanwhile, iOS 6 launches as a free upgrade September 19.

Oh, and if you?re wondering how the nearly two-hour event ended, two words: Foo Fighters.
