There is a growing interest in greener living for numerous reasons. The flagging health of our planet is something we can no longer ignore; as more information comes to light about the health problems associated with dangerous chemicals present in everyday household items, there is a greater push toward purchasing items that exist in a more natural state, such as furniture. Whether you are interested in furnishing your home with environmentally friendly pieces for your personal health, health of the planet or maybe a little bit of both, you have lots of options available to you.
Considerations for Wood Furniture
While wood is not usually associated with eco-friendliness for a variety of reasons, it is possible to buy wood furniture while still being green. It is all about the source. You want to purchase furniture that was made from responsibly produced materials. Your best bet is going with pieces that came from forests that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). To gain certification, forestry operations must undergo a rigorous certification process that looks at various factors, such as sustainable manufacturing practices, limiting damage to local wildlife, and reducing air and water pollution.
Good Alternatives to Wood
You can also purchase pieces made from materials that are very similar to wood but are much more eco-friendly. Bamboo is one such example. It is actually a grass but harder than many types of wood commonly harvested for furniture and flooring, which means it is more durable and will last longer. Its fast growth cycle also means it is highly sustainable. One thing you want to keep in mind, however, is that some manufacturing practices may involve the use of chemicals and other substances that are not so eco-friendly so you want to check on that if you are shopping for bamboo.
Cork is another good choice; even though it is a soft wood, it can hold its own and like bamboo, it is highly sustainable. The material is taken right from the bark and the trees do not even need to be cut down.
Fabrics and Mattresses
When it comes to soft furniture like chairs and sofas, conventional fabrics and other materials used in their production, such as foam fillers, can be problematic in numerous ways that do not just affect the environment, but your health as well. Fabrics are often treated with pesticides and volatile organic compounds?both of which are bad for the air inside and outside your home. Foam padding is treated with flame retardants that can seep out into the air. These substances may cause problems such as headaches and respiratory problems, especially in people prone to asthma or allergies. Look for products that have been upholstered with organic fabrics, colored with natural dyes and that have been stuffed with organic materials, such as natural latex.
If you are interested in a healthier mattress, look for products made from cotton, wool and natural latex. They can be expensive so natural futons may be a good option, and you can place them on a variety of surfaces besides those clunky folding frames, to create a more bed-like experience.
