Honest Xbox Reviews | Review: Pool Nation

In the hectic time of year we are in right now with AAA titles being released nearly every week this becomes an important time for smaller studios that release games on XBLA who get looked over more than ever.
So when hearing a new Pool game was making its way to XBLA I knew I would like to give it a bash, as we have needed a decent pool game on XBLA for a while now with Bankshot billiards 2 now over two years old and looking it.

Pool nation is made by the guys at Cherry pop games who when doing a quick Google search on gave me the following information on them.
Cherry pop is based in Manchester England and Pool nation is there very first game, so we should at least give them a warm welcome to our little corner of the gaming world and wish them luck on this new venture.

Reviewing a pool game for me was always going to be a hard task, as I?ve never been a big fan of this or Snooker, but for some reason many games such as pool nation have been played by me in my gaming life. My first pool game was way back in the day on the Playstation (dirty word) and was called Pool hustler, which the amount of time I spent on the game not being a big pool fan was shocking.
For those who lack any memory of the game please watch the below video for a gaming treat and classic music for any pool lover.

Back on track and in present day Pool nation looks to bring pool up to present day standards and give us that joy for the small price of 800 Microsoft points, but what does the game offer me for that Tony I hear you ask in my mind, well let me get to that right now.

Pool nation will not set you on fire with any amazing game modes you?ve not seen a million times before in a pool game, but?it does offer a few surprises.
In Pool nation you have a few basic modes that I will give a quick breakdown of and kind of let you know how we got on in our time together.

Single Player offers a few modes to test your pool skills on, but the go to mode for me personally was either the 9-ball tour or the 8-ball tour.
In the 9 and 8 ball mode you have to beat the worlds best (fake) pool players, which by doing so will unlock new players, cues, decals for your balls (ooooooooooooooh Matron).
These tournaments are set over four locations and offer at least twelve matches + bonus matches per location, so it offers a decent sized challenge for 800 MSP
Saying that the only issues that comes about is that no matter where you play the table will always look the same sort of way, as after all it is pool.

You also get a Tutorial mode to play around with that lets you get yourself that little bit better and master some of the trickier moves in pool, which being honest with you even after 6 hours play I could not pull off a damn jump shot, so I need more practice I think.

Versus mode offers you a decent amount of modes to play with away from the normal boring ones, the games on offer come under such names as Golf where you need to pocket a chosen ball in the pocket shown, or Killer where you get three lives and must pot a ball on your turn or risk losing a life and many more.
A decent set of game types if you ask me.

Online play: Of course the game has an online mode that will let you play live buddies or random people via Xbox Live, but nothing special is here just your bog standard game modes that I mentioned above just what you would be expect from a game such as this. You can tinker with all the settings such as, frames, tables, location and other things as well.

Endurance mode is another thing on offer where you have to last as long as you can while potting balls that add time to your game, but damn the highest I could get was three minutes, so yes I suck.

Overall Thoughts:
Not a massive review I know, but the game is about pool, which I?m sure you know all the rules for, so thought I would not bother you with the rules of the game and so on.
I?ve not spoke about how the game looks or plays because the video I shared will no doubt show you all this, but if you need it in word form as well then yes it looks very nice.
I?m in touch with my manly side, but I can also appreciate a nice set of shiny balls when I see some and Pool nation has that and then some.
If you?re looking for an upgraded pool game for XBLA then you can?t go wrong with this.
