All About Olympiads | Edurite's Official Blog

The new buzz word which is spreading in schools in India and exciting students, teachers and parents alike is the Olympiad. Olympiads are contests conducted by governments/non-profit organizations at the school level in mathematics and science. They are excellent platforms for students to inculcate mathematics and science problem-solving skills. The first Olympiad was the International Mathematical Olympiad which was held in Romania in 1959. The majority of the participants were from Eastern European countries under the erstwhile Soviet Union. It has now grown into a world-wide initiative spread over 100 countries to encourage numerical skill building and scientific conceptual understanding.

In India, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is organized under the behest of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and the National Board for Higher Mathematics and is for high school students. The XI and XII syllabus is covered in the Olympiad syllabus. However, the problems are of a much higher standard and depth. Calculus and statistics are not included in the Olympiad syllabus. ?Students who get top scores in the INMO are eligible to compete at the international level.

Only a strong foundation at the primary level can enable students to have good conceptual understanding of subjects at the high school level. ?With this in mind, the All India Schools Mathematics Teachers Association (AISMTA) is conducting mathematics Olympiads at 11 levels, right from nursery to high school level. ?Parents and schools that encourage students to participate in contests such as the Olympiads enable their children and students to get a wider exposure in problem-solving and thinking skills.

Apart from the mathematical and science Olympiad, there are recent developments of Olympiads being conducted for English too. ?Most of the Olympiads are conducted in the month of November and December.

A few things that parents and teachers need to keep in mind while encouraging their children and students to participate in the Olympiads is to encourage participation rather than competition. ? A healthy competitive spirit is what is required and all participants get certificates to acknowledge their efforts. ?The winners get various prizes ranging from laptops to educational CDs.

There are a wide variety of reference materials available to enable students to adequately prepare for the Olympiads. ?Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools Introductory I and 2 and Advanced 1 give ample practice for primary students to face the Olympiads. ? With good preparation and practice, each and every student can get enriched by participating in an Olympiad and maybe win prizes too!
